Burning Man
The original modern pop-up city: for one week each year ~70,000 people build Black Rock City in the Nevada desert — a full temporary metropolis with streets, civic infrastructure, radical self-reliance and a gift economy — then leave no trace. Nearly every pop-up city that followed borrows its core insight: a city can be temporary and still be real.
Founded 1986 (Baker Beach) / 1990 in Black Rock Desert; the acknowledged ancestor of the pop-up city movement and of regional Burns worldwide
