A month-long pop-up city at the Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster focused on longevity biotech, medical devices, and human augmentation, billed as Japan's premier longevity biomedical popup. The program includes meetings with Japanese regulators, research institutes, and biopharma companies, leveraging Japan's fast regulatory pathways for cell and gene therapies. An eight-day 'temporary village by the Mediterranean' at the Anjeliq Nomad Hotel in Alanya, drawing 300+ solopreneurs, remote professionals, founders and creators. Keynotes, hands-on workshops and unconference sessions sit alongside a substantial wellbeing programme of yoga, breathwork, dance and mindfulness. Positioned as a rethink of how location-independent people live and build.

A seven-day hybrid festival in the Moroccan surf town of Taghazout aimed at digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers and travel creators from the Arab world and beyond. The original modern pop-up city: for one week each year ~70,000 people build Black Rock City in the Nevada desert — a full temporary metropolis with streets, civic infrastructure, radical self-reliance and a gift economy — then leave no trace. Nearly every pop-up city that followed borrows its core insight: a city can be temporary and still be real.

A small alpine festival hosted at Coliving.frilingue in the village of Liddes, combining unconference sessions and keynotes with a full coliving stay in chalets. A billionaire-backed company that assembled ~60,000 acres of Solano County farmland to build a new walkable city of up to 400,000 people. After withdrawing its 2024 ballot initiative, it pivoted in 2026 to having Suisun City annex ~23,000 acres of its land (bypassing a county-wide vote), alongside a proposed 'Solano Shipyard'; activists are demanding a public vote and the outcome remains contested as of August 2026.

Tempe, Arizona, USA · Residents since 2023

The first intentionally car-free residential neighborhood built from scratch in the US: a $200M, 17-acre development with 288 apartments and ~300 residents as of 2026, plus on-site retail, restaurants, and a farmers market. Residents get no parking but receive unlimited light-rail passes, bike infrastructure, and access to Waymo and shared mobility. Not a network-state project ideologically, but a flagship for the build-new-neighborhoods movement.

Devon Zuegel's planned permanent town on 266 acres of former industrial land in Cloverdale, Sonoma County — the long-term home the Edge Esmeralda pop-ups prototype. The revised plan includes ~605 homes (405 market-rate units plus 200 senior units), a 200-room hotel with event space, retail, and 168 acres of open space. It is in the city's entitlement process amid resident pushback over water, contamination, and environmental review, with a possible ballot fight looming.

San Francisco, CA, United States · Opened 2025, ongoing

A 16-storey 1908 building at 995 Market St, San Francisco, converted into a permanent 'vertical village' of themed floors housing labs for AI, crypto, biotech, neuroscience, longevity, deep tech, human coordination and arts. Members pay citizenship fees and eight floors are being converted to co-living residences. It bills itself as the first node of an inter-city network state and hosts pop-ups including Viva Frontier Tower.

Próspera, Roatán, Honduras · Operating since 2025

The successor to Vitalia, led by Niklas Anzinger (also GP of Infinita VC): a decentralized city project for longevity biotech acceleration inside the Próspera ZEDE. In 2026 it hosted the two-month Infinite Games festival of frontier science and performance (with Frontier, Body, Mind, and Social 'games'), a BioHub startup accelerator and residency, and the Liberty Acceleration Summit.

Africa's first Digital Free Zone (formerly Talent City), founded by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (Andela, Flutterwave) and Deji Ashiru: a NEPZA-registered digital economic zone offering tax incentives, simplified incorporation, and e-residency for remote-first African tech companies. A 72,000 sqm physical campus in Alaro City is planned for ~1,000 residents and 2,500 remote workers, with first residents targeted for 2026; backers include the Africa Finance Corporation.

A private charter city and special economic zone (ZEDE) on Roatán with its own regulatory framework, digital governance, and crypto-friendly economy, home to biotech clinics, startups, and the Infinita City longevity community. Honduras's Supreme Court declared the ZEDE framework unconstitutional in 2024, but as of 2026 Próspera remains operational and construction continues while an $11B ICSID arbitration against Honduras is pending; the new Asfura administration re-signed the ICSID Convention in March 2026.

A 28-day pop-up city that brought 800 builders (selected from 2,000+ applicants; 46% working in AI/ML, 16% in hardware and robotics) to Shanghai's Hongqiao International CBD, hosted during the 2026 Hongqiao International Coffee Culture Festival. Organized by The Mu, a global builder community spanning San Francisco to Buenos Aires, with themed weeks on AI, biotech and longevity, robotics, and gaming, and the China premiere of ClawCon.

A one-month pop-up city run by Ipê City, which calls itself Brazil's first network-state node. Hundreds of builders co-live in themed hacker houses (Privacy, AI, Onchain, Artizen) and prototype governance, identity, and public-service infrastructure for an internet-native city. An annual three-month off-grid village in the Southern California desert where residents build their own solar-powered infrastructure and pursue a low-cost, high-tech, self-sufficient life focused on AI and creative technology. The season ends with the Mars Electronica art and research showcase before the village is fully dismantled. Predates Zuzalu and runs on a much lower budget than most pop-up cities.

A one-month pop-up city at the Aleph Hub in Buenos Aires organized by the Crecimiento movement, which works to make Argentina a crypto and emerging-tech hub. The March 2026 edition structured four themed weeks with 10+ events including the Aleph Hackathon, plus community life from asados to sports tournaments. It brings together builders, founders, institutions, and ecosystem partners around crypto and AI.

Chiang Mai, Thailand · January 24 – February 14, 2026

A 'temporary city of camps' organized around positive externalities in phygital communities, rooted in the Chinese-speaking Web3/DAO scene that emerged from Dali, China. The 2026 edition at Far Studios in Chiang Mai combined a camp-based gathering of communities with a three-week international art exhibition. It builds on the 2024 Chiang Mai confederation of pop-up villages.

Kilifi, Kenya · 2025 inaugural edition; ZuAfrique 2.0 April 12 – May 3, 2026

A pop-up city in Kilifi on the Kenyan coast billing itself as Africa's largest onchain movement, combining immersive coliving with Web3 building and cultural-tech fusion. A network-state sandbox residency in the Swiss Alps for 150-200 people prototyping decentralized governance, regenerative economics, and d/acc-aligned frontier tech (Web3, AI, biotech, BCI). A six-week developer residency in Chiang Mai's Nimman district focused on Ethereum development, zero-knowledge proofs and cryptographic tooling. It drew 830 applications, accepted 160 developers and hosted 80 in person from over 15 countries, with 40+ mentors running 83 workshops and 34 open-source projects submitted.

A six-week co-learning and co-creating pop-up village (山海坞) and one of the largest islands of the 2024 Chiang Mai Archipelago. It convened thinkers and builders around Web3, AI, the creator economy and sustainability, pairing new technology with evolving philosophies and lifestyles. Primarily Chinese-speaking in origin, it has also run editions in Singapore.

A confederation of at least a dozen coliving and coworking pop-up villages that converged on Chiang Mai in autumn 2024 as neighbours in a single pop-up city, ahead of Devcon 7 in Bangkok. There was no central organizing team — each island ran itself while sharing events, dinners and residents. Members included Edge City Lanna, ShanhaiWoo, Invisible Garden, The Mu, MEGAZu, HER DAO, Lovepunks and the Funding the Commons Builders Residency.

A 30-day pop-up village for ~50 selected Ethereum app builders, co-created by EigenLayer (Eigen Foundation) and MegaETH ahead of Devcon 2024 in Chiang Mai. The cohort incubated 17 projects during four weeks of co-working and co-living. No 2026 edition has been announced.

A 'hacker's safe space' in the surf town of Ericeira, Portugal: a monastery-styled residency where small cohorts of builders live and work with focus, minimal distraction, and shared rituals. It has hosted multi-week cohorts since 2024. Current schedule not independently confirmed.

The largest attempt yet to industrialise coliving: a hospitality chain built for people who wanted to 'stay, travel and work abroad indefinitely', pairing hostel-style rooms with coworking, wellness and events across roughly 100 properties in 22 countries. It listed on NASDAQ in 2022, then ran out of road — administration in July 2024, and by the end of that August every property had been sold to Collective Hospitality. It is here because its scale and its failure are both part of this story: demand for the life was real; the capital-heavy way it was financed was not.

Kutaisi, Georgia · July – August 2024

A Zuzalu-lineage pop-up village in Georgia's Caucasus region centered on d/acc (defensive accelerationism), privacy tech, and self-sovereign communities. It ran for roughly six weeks in summer 2024 and is frequently cited in retrospectives on the pop-up village movement. No later editions found.

Próspera, Roatán, Honduras · January – March 2024 (pop-up); project wound down January 2025

A two-month longevity pop-up city in the Próspera ZEDE co-founded by Niklas Anzinger and Laurence Ion with VitaDAO backing, using Próspera's regulatory flexibility to accelerate biotech and life-extension experiments. The co-founders parted ways in January 2025 and the Vitalia brand ended; its Roatán activities continue under Anzinger's successor project, Infinita City.

Las Palmas / Agaete, Gran Canaria, Spain · Last confirmed edition July 15–29, 2023 in Agaete; no 2024–2026 edition announced

One of the earliest European nomad conferences, held on Gran Canaria since 2016 and drawing up to 300 attendees plus around 30 international speakers on remote work, innovation, tourism and community building. Later editions moved from Las Palmas to the village of Agaete and blended conference sessions with concerts. The official site still shows the 2023 edition as the most recent, and no new date has been announced.

Lustica Bay, Montenegro · March 25 – May 25, 2023

The original two-month pop-up city convened by Vitalik Buterin and collaborators, bringing ~200 core residents together around longevity, crypto, and governance. It spawned the entire pop-up city movement: within 18 months more than 20 derivative villages had launched worldwide. Zuzalu itself never repeated; zuzalu.city now serves as a community hub and calendar for successor 'Zu' events.

Montréal (final edition), Canada · Last ran September 7–13, 2022 in Montréal; concluded after five editions

A conference for experienced digital nomads — deliberately not for beginners — that planned seven editions on seven continents over fourteen years. Five ran between 2016 and 2022, in Bangkok, Lisbon, Medellín, Cape Town and Montréal, each capped at a few hundred long-term nomads. The project wound down after the Montréal edition and has not run since.

Berlin / Lisbon (varies), Germany · No 2026 edition confirmed; the festival's regular Berlin and Lisbon run ended in the late 2010s

The first large European digital nomad conference, launched in Berlin in summer 2015 with talks, workshops and mastermind sessions on location-independent business. Editions ran in Berlin, Bangkok and Lisbon, drawing around 1,000 participants from 45 countries at its peak and 10,000+ across all DNX events and camps. The brand's site remains online but no current edition is scheduled and the founders have shifted to online programmes.
